Resumen del Libro

libro Injurias A Cristo

In 1630 five Portuguese Conversos residing in Madrid – Miguel Rodríguez and his wife Isabel Núñez de Álvarez, Fernán Báez, Leonor Rodríguez, and Beatriz Núñez – were accused at the tribunal of Toledo of having desecrated a crucifix. The Inquisition’s investigation led to a confession» and the Conversos were condemned to the stake. The auto-de-fe took place in Madrid in July 1632. During this affair a legend evolved that the image in the crucifix spoke and complained to its torturers. The legend provoked a large movement for reparation, and this auto-de-fe was publicized throughout Europe. Brotherhoods were created for worship of the «humiliated Christ», processions and festivals were held, books on the subject were published, and a church was built on the site where the «offense» had taken place. Many Conversos fled to other countries. Discusses the political context of the auto-de-fe, focusing on the confrontation between the modernizing government of King Felipe IV and the Inquisition.»
