Perus investment climate has improved darmatically in the 1990s, and the hyperinflation and economic turmoil of the previous decade are past. The main objective since 1990 has been to encourage privately owned businesses to emerge and develop. The more stable economic scene has been supported by political developments: a reduction of terrorist activity, settlement of a border dispute with Ecuador. Initial years of hardship, with per capita income at its lowest level for decades in 1992, have gradually given way to steady growth. Peru has been very successful in attracting foreign direct investment, but as the scope for further privatisation of state assets dwindles, it remains to be seen if this success can be maintained.
