This thesis examines the fusion of myth and history in the novels En el tiempo de las mariposas by Julia Alvarez and La fiesta del chivo by Mario Vargas Llosa and focuses specifically on the psychological archetype of the dictator. It explores the term of dictator and its manifestations in Latin American with detailed attention to the dictatorship of Rafael Leonidas Trujillo Molina. The thesis identifies and develops three stylistic resources that the authors use to provide deeper insight into this messianic figure of the Dominican Republic: presidential leadership, national politics and divinity.
